Designed as something of a tribute to Final Fantasy games seen in the past, Final Fantasy IX features a rather diverse and expansive cast of characters. Each of the main protagonists and antagonists features unique designs and motivations and it created a rather colourful and creative experience.
Main Characters
Final Fantasy IX has eight playable characters seven of which are mandatory to obtain. Quina is an optional character which the player can choose to recruit or not. However, unlike in Final Fantasy VII, Quina can be recruited at almost any time after he/she has been found.

Although Necron is the final boss in the game, his appearance is often considered a little random. Excluding Necron, Kuja acts as the main antagonist for large parts of the game with Garland also looking to pull the strings behind the scenes.
