How to Obtain the Lunar Harp in Final Fantasy VII

Cloud and his party need to hurry to the City of the Ancients, but first they’ll need the Lunar Harp to get through the Sleeping Forest. Here’s how to find this key item in Bone Village.

After the dramatic events that unfolded at the Temple of the Ancients, Cloud awakens in Gongaga and must chase after Aerith and Sephiroth. In order to catch up with them at the City of the Ancients, we have a stop to make first: Bone Village. If we want to reach the City, we’ll have to pass through the Sleeping Forest, and that requires a Lunar Harp.

From Gongaga, you’ll have to take the Tiny Bronco up the coastline to the Northern Continent and park on the beach beside Bone Village—you can’t miss it, just look for giant bones. Once you arrive you’re free to head out the northwest exit and into the Sleeping Forest, but the screen will loop endlessly until you give up. You really do need the Lunar Harp to bypass this, which means playing the Bone Village minigame.

Talk to the attendant near the entrance of Bone Village and tell him you want to “Start diggin’,” and to dig for the Lunar Harp. You’ll then be told to position staff around the area, so move to the spots where you want to set somebody and assign them. You can place up to 5 staff, and each will cost 100G. You’ll want to set a few just to be sure—put them on the top level on the left-hand side of the bone tent.

Once you’ve set the staff, you’re able to detonate the bomb. The workers will then analyze the tremors and point toward the treasure. Follow their gaze and see where their gazes intersect—this is where you should dig. It should be near the tent pole, as indicated in the screenshot above, but it doesn’t hurt to take a moment and confirm where the staff are looking. Once you know where to dig, stand on the spot and press the [Switch] button to confirm.

It’s a weird method of excavation, right? You’d think using dynamite would destroy the things they’re looking for. Anyway, one of the workers will spend the night digging in the indicated spot, and your prize will be in the treasure box by the entrance. If everything goes right, it should be the Lunar Harp.

Once you’ve obtained the Lunar Harp, you’re good to go! Save your game outside just in case and head into the Sleeping Forest through the northwest exit. You don’t need to do anything to use the harp and proceed; from the first screen, from the vision with Aerith, head to the next, and the game will let you continue. Keep an eye out, though, after the Forest “awakens.” You should see a red materia orb flitting about if you pay attention; catch it, and you’ll receive the Kjata materia.

Cid’s joke weapon, the Mop, can also be found on the lower level near the ladders. You can return to Bone Village later to dig up valuable items you may have otherwise missed, like the Huge Materia, the W-Item Materia, the Phoenix or Bahamut-ZERO materia, or the Key to Sector 5.

Once you've earned passage through the Sleeping Forest with the Lunar Harp, watch out for the Kjata materia.
